Susan Hughes began her career in adaptive sports as a volunteer ski instructor many years ago on Grouse Mountain teaching a student with a visual impairment. This launched Susan into a lifelong commitment to adaptive snowsports. Since then she has served the community by acting as BC Adaptive SnowSports (formally DSABC) Executive Director (5 years), served on the Canadian Association for Disabled Skiing (CADS) board (1990 – 1994) and 2007 to present, currently in the role of National Chair.
Susan currently implements the Snowbility program throughout BC which aims to develop sustainable adaptive snowsport programs. Snowbility is a program that supports the development of grass roots adaptive sports programs (alpine and snowboarding) in emerging regions of the Province. Snowbility supports the recruitment and training of volunteer instructors, coaches, and program coordinators who will in turn support athlete development of skiers and snowboarders with disabilities.
Working with programs in several communities around BC, Susan helps build a foundation of trained volunteers with expertise and knowledge in on-hill training, program development and sustainability and community involvement and awareness.
Susan is very well acquainted with the technical aspects of adaptive snowsport both at a national and provincial level. She is a CADS Level 4 examiner responsible for club/program development within BC delivering multiple CADS courses throughout the season with an over arching focus on building capacity for adaptive sports programs within communities in BC and beyond. She has expert knowledge base in sustainable program development, team building, communication, strategic vision, organizational structure and capacity development.
